USA Study Visa: Types, Requirements and Process
In recent times, there has been an upsurge in the desire to pursue education in the United States. Once an aspiring student secures admission to their desired university, the subsequent crucial stride involves applying for a USA Study Visa, facilitating the transformation of their aspiration to study in the “Land of the Free” into a tangible reality.
There are three types of study visas to the US:
Types of USA Study Visa
F-1 Study Visa
The F-1 Study Visa is a non-immigrant designation that grants international students the opportunity to pursue education at SEVP-approved institutions in the United States. Designed for full-time enrollment, F-1 visas offer the flexibility of off-campus employment, subject to specific conditions. These instances encompass scenarios like student assistance or facing significant economic challenges.
M-1 Study Visa
The M-1 Study Visa is issued to students aiming to engage in non-academic or vocational studies or training at an institution. M-1 visa holders can partake in various vocational and technical programs, and they can also work without a work permit until the culmination of their chosen course.
J-1 Study Visa
The J-1 Study Visa is designed for individuals who intend to work in the United States as part of diverse study-focused exchange and visitor programs. J-1 exchange visitors arrive in the US to learn, teach, and acquire skill-based training. This visa category is specifically tailored for those seeking advanced training opportunities.

- Your intent to depart the United States upon completion of the course of study.
- Proof of Funds - How you will pay all educational, living, and travel costs.
What is the process to apply for a USA Study Visa 2023?
Step 1: Apply and Secure Admission to a US Educational Institution
Commence by applying to a US university or college and obtaining an acceptance letter. In the US, most full-time undergraduate and graduate programs require applications to be submitted by December or January each year, with admission notifications typically sent out in March and April.
Step 2: Acquire Form I-20 or DS-2019 from Your School
Once accepted by a school, you’ll receive one of three forms: Form I-20, Certificate of Eligibility for Non-immigrant (F-1) Student Status for Academic and Language Students, or Form I-20, Certificate of Eligibility for Non-immigrant (M-1) Student Status for Vocational Students.
Step 3: Complete Payment of the I-901 SEVIS Fee
Upon receipt of your I-20 or DS-2019 form from your school, proceed to pay the required fees online. Most students, except those from certain countries, can pay this fee online using a credit card. This fee, distinct from the visa application fee, is mandatory.
Step 4: Locate Your Nearest US Embassy or Consulate
Apply for an international student visa at the US embassy or consulate nearest to your location. The US Department of State provides an online search tool for locating US embassies and consulates. Procedures for obtaining a USA Study Visa may vary based on the embassy through which you apply.
Step 5: Complete the Online Form DS-160
Subsequently, fill out the Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application, or Form DS-160. Mandatory documents must be submitted at this stage. Select the US embassy where you intend to have your visa interview and submit your application.
Step 6: Arrange Your Visa Interview
Contact your nearest US embassy or consulate to schedule your visa interview. Waiting times for interviews can differ based on the specific embassy.
Step 7: Submit the Visa Application Fee
Pay the application fee for the USA Study Visa. This fee remains consistent regardless of your application location or origin. Detailed instructions on when and how to make the payment will be provided by your embassy.
Step 8: Attend Your Visa Interview
The interview serves as the concluding significant step in the visa application process. During the interview, you’ll be asked questions in English, primarily concerning your motivations for selecting your chosen educational institution and your post-program plans. Successful completion of the interview will lead to guidance from your embassy regarding passport issuance along with your newly acquired visa.
Step 9: Receive Your Visa
Upon satisfying all the preceding steps and obtaining approval for an international student visa to the United States, your embassy will return your passport to you, containing your newly issued visa.
